Happenings: Shark Cannabalism
Shark on Shark Violence is Tearing Them Apart!
You're just minding your own business, paroling the coastline, looking for some lunch when you happen upon some exceptionally tender rotting whale carcasses. Not one, but 3! I know what you're thinking...this is my lucky day. Sure, nearly every day as an Apex predator is a good one, but a free lunch is always welcome. And then, you're reminded that there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Insert play on "We're gonna need a bigger boat," here.
Yes, this 10ft Great White was attacked and nearly bitten in half by another Great White at least 20ft long. Crikey, indeed. Click here for the full story.
But the sad tale here is about the sea life lost to beach nets designed to save ours. Yes, beaches protected by anti-shark netting are safer for humans, but they not only kill sharks (which is bad enough) - whales, turtles and anything big enough to get entangled suffer slow painful deaths or escape with possibly fatal injuries if they are lucky. People like whales and turtles, right? They're always good guys in animated movies. Seems this mega shark eats slightly smaller also large shark is just another case of the media tapping into our fears instead of using the happening to bring up questions about the morality of beach netting. At what cost should our leisure and relaxation be available to us? Great, now I've gone and made myself sad. Save the sharks!
